Unawatuna Closenberg Surf Break

Gallé Closenberg Surf Point nr Deweta Station. Beach break. Consistent small waves 2ft-4ft on sand, 100m ride. Potential pollution.

Galle is more famous for its Fort than its surf points however on the beach the waves are fine for beginners.

Clossenburg Beach break is great for beginners of if you want an early morning paddle. One of the better breaks in Galle. Mainly rights in the bay, sand bottom entry, holds to 3ft and about 100m rides.

The bay is overlooked by the Closenberg Hotel (on the right if facing the bay). Closenberg Hotel is an old colonial style hotel with a modern bar/pool areas with weekend parties, easy to find in a Tuk Tuk. Next to Deweta Station. New Juice Bar and surf school last season 14-15.

Being close to the main town of Galle there is potential that the sea is not as clean as some of the more remote beaches, just don’t swallow too much of the water, pollution and run off after heavy rain can be a problem. There are plenty of other sightseeing and shopping options and some of the better and cleaner break at Kabalana are only a 10 minute Tuk Tuk ride away.

Clossenburg (Citadel on which the sea roars), now known as Closenberg was an island in the Galle harbour on which the Dutch in 1719 built a Fortalice with a battery of two guns, (the Sinhalese called it ‘Aluth Kotuwa’ or New Fort) and after the British arrived in 1790 the Fortalice lay abandoned.

When Galle was the focal point of Dutch influence in Sri Lanka, Closenberg was of great significance to them. The Portuguese had encountered the Dutch soldiers at Closenberg where fierce fighting took place. In surfing history of Sri Lanka, some of the first waves ridden in the country belong to Clsenberg point. From the Island which now houses Closenberg hotel, you can see the surf breaking nicely in the bay below.

Closenberg surf break, just around the Closenberg island, is getting more and more popular every season. As if Sptember 2014, there is an active surf club for the point. Many surf schools in Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa use this as their training ground.
